THE CRYSTAL CHEST

What is it?
The Crystal Chest is the unofficial name of a treasure trest in Taverly. The chest can only be opened with a Crystal Key which can be bought from the Grand Exchange for 52.2k, recieved from a drop or a clue scroll, looted or created by combining the two adjoining parts; the tooth half of the key (36.9k) and the loop half of the key (13.0k).

The chest itself when opened will always contain an uncut dragonstone (42.6k) and more than 90% of the time, a bonus item(s) which can result in a loss of up to 10k or a profit of up to 30k. The key will dissappear after it is used. There is a 9/16 chance of gaining a profit and the average profit from opening a chest is roughly 3k.



Isn't this basically a gamble?
I will be honest here - yes, it is a gamble. There is a chance you will lose out but judging by experience, in the long term after say, 100-200 keys, you most likely won't. I'm not gonna guarentee it though but if you take a look at the screenshots below, I have made some sort of profit from it. I'm not going to persuade you and I only hope in influencing you but the choice is yours, honestly. Buying one or two keys to test it out most likely won't work as the profit will only come in the long term.

I've placed the expected income as 300k-800k as it is the worked out average although the maximum you could make is 3M (highly improbable though as in my 120 attempts, i've only gotten the maximum loot - a rune platelegs - 4 times) with just 100 keys. The most you can lose with 100 keys is 960k but I'm going to give that a 0.00001% chance (unofficial figures, of course) of happening as that would mean obtaining a lone dragonstone in every attempt whereas I have encountered the lone dragonstone only around 6-7 times in my 120 or so attempts.

These prices are correct as of 30/04/11 and I have taken all the data from the Item Database, not the Runescape Wikia.

TIPS
The Ring of Wealth now increases your chance of getting a better loot from the chest so always keep it equipped!



If your not any teleportation methods, it is suggested that you wear weight-reducing equipment such as the Boots of Lightness, Penance Gloves, Spotted/Spottier Capes, Agile Legs & the Agile Top.



Bringing the best Beast of Burden you can, can also be a great help! If you haven't got the required summoning and your inventory overfills with items, quickly run or teleport to Falador, bank your loot then run back to Taverly.



Although the limit on buying keys on the Grand Exchange are 100 keys every 4 hours, you can actually maximize your profit by buying 100 crystal keys, then buying a further 100 loop halves and tooth halves in order to be able to open the chest 200 times every 4 hours!
Ideally, to fasten the process you should buy 100 crystal keys and assemble another 100 keys using the adjoining parts in one go so you only need to run or teleport from Falador to Taverly every 10 or so keys instead of having to teleport to the Grand Exchange to sell the loot and purchase more keys. This requires around 10.4m so most people prefer to buy 10 keys at a time then sell the loot in order to buy another set of keys. You can also bring Falador and Varrock teleport tablets in order to speed up the process (if you take 10 keys at a time, this should only cost 6-12k depending on how many keys you have).

Before setting out to spend over 10m on these keys - ALWAYS CHECK the item database or the grand exchange to see if there is any decrease in the loot or the uncut dragonstone. Making sure that are no drastic changes can be vital to ensure that you won't lose out.

CURRENT PROGRESS
I bought 9 Crystal Keys with 475k, sold the loot obtained from the chest then bought more keys until I bought the Grand Exchange limit.

In my first 120 keys, from 475k, I sold most of the loot for 494k and I kept the 1000 coal ores, 1800 iron ores and roughly 120k worth of runes which totals to about 1m, meaning I have more than doubled my cashpile.

Edit:

Tried selling D stones at mid and they don't sell, so there could potentially be lower profits.

 

100 Keys

100k~ profit in 30 mins...

40~ spinach roles...

 

Bought 100 keys for 5.3m at mid. After about 25 mins of keying and adding up my total, i made 5.7m back. So about 400k profit in less than half an hour.

Which isn't bad, but considering you can only buy 100 keys per 4 hours, it comes down to 100k an hour.

My profit isn't a guarantee for all, but thanks for the idea.. and free 400k lol

Just a single note; before you try buying a couple of keys, PLEASE check the grand exchange prices on the loot first otherwise you may lose some cash as I haven't had time to log in and check although I'm pretty sure the prices are kinda stable at the moment but really, I can't base it on my assumptions so please check!

You have a 48.6% chance of losing money, FYI.

 

I did mention that somewhat if you actually read the guide.

I'm not forcing you to try it as I said but everyone who has posted so far has made some sort of profit. Even if there is a 48.6% chance of losing money, there is still a 51.4% of gaining money and when you do, you can gain up to 30k while you can only lose up to 10k, if that makes sense. So if say, you buy 100 keys and according to the "statistics", you lose out on 50 keys and gain on 50 keys - you could still be profiting up to 2M.

I just bought max keys from .g.e (100) and made about 250k off of them, pretty good guide for what I imagine to be a break even to 500k or so profit possibility. I think it would be very rare to lose money, although like was stated it is a gamble.

 

its possible, remember you need to make 900k+- (100k keys) before you even get into the profit region so you might want to take it into consideration, I did it 2 times and i just about broke even on the second attempt, 40+ spinach roles lol...
