Are my CPU temperatures too high?

    Hi,

I've recently built my own computer (or assembled should I say!)

I haven't OC'd or anything, and I'm running the following:

i5 3570k @3.4Ghz (I'm using the stock cooler that came with it!)
    Radeon 7970 Ghz version
    8GB RAM 1600Mhz
    650W Corsair PSU
    CM Storm Enforcer

When I'm playing Crysis 3 on very high on everything, which my system does well, I've been running core temp to measure my temperatures.

My CPU has been getting to like 80 degrees celsius. Is this too hot for the CPU?? If I want to play for maybe 3 or 4 hours a day, I'm sure it would be going a bit higher but I don't want to ruin the lifespan of my CPU.

Is it worth investing in liquid cooling (like a H60?) or would it be able to handle temperatures of like 80-90 degrees celsius? I've had a look around and can't seem to find anything concrete on what's safe and what's not.

80° Celsius is above the recommended threshold although it would be considered OK for stock cooling under maximum load. I don't know if you need water cooling, but certainly invest in something. Personally I use an upgraded heatsync with two ventilators. My load temps do not exceed 70° Celsius while overclocked to 4.5GHz - and that's after over 18 hours of stress testing. Granted, I'm on a Sandy chip (2500K), but the difference is obvious.

If you play on high settings or play games that demand more CPU usage etc, you surely need to upgrade from the stock cooler into something better. Maybe a liquid cooling or air cooling.

Make sure the Heatsink is properly seated by checking the back of the motherboard (your case has a cpu cutout) to ensure that the plastic pins are indeed fastened correctly.

80 degrees is nothing too bad to be honest, and could be expected if you got a sub par chip which also happens. Then it could also be your ambient temps since your component temps will scale directly with ambient temps. How many fans do you have on your computer, are they set to push/pull?

A lot of variables to consider so we need more info to give a solid answer.

80c is high, but Ivy Bridge chips can run at 90's (Intel says it can run at a max of 105c, but I'm sure you're not crazy to go that far!).

80-90c is extremely dangerous. You're at risk of blowing up your computer and setting it alight.
Take it to someone who knows about computers before you muck it up anymore; This may sound condescending but it's for the best.

I have the i7 3770k and it runs at 30c after being running for 3 days.

IMO Water cooling is a no-no. It can leak at anytime and get all over your machine and ruin it from rust.
I'm just old-school and would rather stick with a normal heatsink.
If you go this route look into a Noctua DH-14 Might be pricey, but it keeps the CPU incredibly cool and is practically silent.

I agree with this though. My brother is using the Noctua DH-14 and on load he is getting a maximum of like 40-45 degrees at max.

70s is as high as you want to get. Just buy a nice cooler and it will be fine.

depends what your ambient temp is.

for stock if your rooms uberly hot thats not surprising.

not rly, if you arent retarded and leak test, tighten everything properly it will be fine. and they dont rust? :S they just die straight off if the liquid does kill it. a lot of the times you can just let em dry for a few days and they work fine.
