Jail Time for Scamming Rs Accounts.

Hacking an account from someone is something that shouldn't be punished with Jail time.
BUT; If someone is to sell an account, and then hack it back, then yes. That is just like scamming off of E-bay, or craigslist. Etc. That is stealing, and they should be prosecuted.

During the last few years new laws have been implemented to make sure people also follow the rules over the internet.

I think cases like these are good, to show people that they are not safe by doing illegal activaties over the internet.

Your ISP can ALWAYS trace you back, so if the authorities are looking for someone they will find that person because the ISP is obligated to help them.

He probably wasnt arrested for scamming the rs account but he probably keylogged the computer and got a couple credit card numbers and tried to use them. Probably jailed on id theft and dailymail is exaggerating it

I believe that this can be charged as fraud or theft. I read somewhere that accounts with recurring membership on them become property of the credit card owner, that was from some court case where someone sued Jagex for banning them. If you apply that idea, then I guess it would count as stealing of someone else's property. It's a pretty drastic action to take for virtual items though.

I LOL'ed at the cereal, but technically, although it is rarely pursued, internet hacking is a felonious act, in the US anyways. If this kid just convinced another kid to give him his password, that's not really illegal because the kid who got "hacked" broke the JaGeX TOS by giving out that information, so he already broke the rules himself. On the other hand since this particular situation includes the police and possible jail time, Im assuming he used some sort of phishing or actual virtual hacking into the victims computer? If this is the case then he did indeed commit a felony, based on the Internet Security Act as well as individual state laws concerning this act. If you would like to see the state ones, the link is here

    STATE HACKING LAWS

Did he deserve what he got? I believe so, small time hackers these days get away with so much because its not worth going after them, if your not stealing millions from a federal bank, you will most likely go under radar but that doesn't mean what you are doing is right or that you shouldn't have to face the repercussions of your actions.

Well imagine you rent an account from Jagex. If you treat it as rent. How about if you rent a house or car? Is it not illegal to take some1's rented items?. SO jail time looks sufficient.

I believe the Netherlands are cracking down on this lol.

Completely true, hacking is as illegal as robbing somebody on the street with a flick-knife. You are doing the same thing as the robber, stealing their items (accounts) and money (gp). If the police don't start catching small-time hackers and internet thieves then the whole internet would be like the sythe black-market. I never even knew about 'scamming' before i joined sythe. In short, all crimes should be dealt with, however I think that this case was just unfairly made as an ineffective example to the open public.

I think they should just Ip ban the scammer from runescape. Not put a kid in jail for something so absurd.

Just IP ban him, JAIL for scamming a virtual game...is a bit too much, but considering people PAY irl money to get the pixels..its like stealing they're IRL money aswell...so in some way, they should be jailed.
