If the guy was that stupid to fall for it, it can't have been too good an account.

    EDIT: Finn wins.

You can put a value as in how much money you've spent in membership.

Paper money has no true value, in reality it's just a piece of paper. The value it has is the theoretical value you give it, unlike gold and silver. Since people are arrested and jailed for stealing paper money, the same should apply for virtual items.

I don't quite agree that jail time should be given if it was taken from the other kid, since (as was said before) it isn't really that persons property, now whether or not he can make an argument of taking his information that's a different story.

True, but I'm curious as to if you could put value on the past memberships or has the value for those already expired due to you using that month already. (Like how if you pay for 10 months of a gym membership and only use 2 you can't ask for those 2 back because you used their services.)
I'm assuming the value is lost but I'm not 100% sure.

Depends on the account, say its multiple months of memberships. I knew places that have sued people for 5 dollars.

First off, I agree with your point that there are more serious crimes out there that should be taken care of. This belief usually (including my case) stems from Marijuana legalization. Sure, it's a drug. It can do negative things when used with bad or no discretion. Would you rather there was somebody living in society hacking Runescape accounts and smoking weed, or raping children and killing people?

Now, on to the issue at hand. Technically, they're not stealing anything from you AS LONG as your account hasn't had money spent on it (legally). Jagex states in their Privacy Policy or Terms & Conditions or something that your RuneScape account is property of Jagex. If you've spent, say, 2 years playing on members servers, that's a completely different issue. Now it gets into the realm of theft, and can be taken more seriously by law. I don't think it should be, because it's not -that- hard to keep an account out of the hands of a hacker, but it definitely can be. To make hacking accounts on video games nonpunishable, we'd have to change our definition of theft, and we won't.

tl;dr - I don't think hacking RuneScape accounts should result in prison time ( MAYBE a fine or something) but in order for that to be the case, we'd have to change our definition of theft, since you are stealing somebody else's property (assuming they've spent money on membership).

Well it kind of depends. Like if he sent him to a phising site or used a RAT then it would make more sense but if it was like key logging (which is still bad don't get me wrong) then I don't think jail would be the right solution. I mean at the moment there are TONS of people hacking runescape accounts and other accounts and 99% of the time they get away with it. I don't like how they pick out random people to be punished for some thing that a lot of people do although that's the world we live in.

Like ZDQuesting suggested, if they have actually used their credit card to pay for something and you steal that then you're technically stealing money from somebody's credit card. That is definately a crime despite how petty it may seem.

Stolen property is stolen property no matter what is stolen. The true question is: is the property theirs or Jagex's?

IT is a crime to steal information such as passwords. Hacking in general is illegal.
So why not send them to jail?
A good majority of sythe users should deserve jail time

It's like stealing. You could get a class C misdemeanor for removing a chap stick from Wal-Mart. But if the issue's on the punishment of the crime, then my opinion would be that jail time would be too extreme for stealing a video game account as opposed to hacking bank accounts and company information.

The 1st thing is that a boy cant be jailed until 18 and if he didnt scam more than 500 nothing should be happen to him.. but if he scammed more than 500 then he should be ticketed..
Police must look for other things.. not a crying boy who has stolen an account.
