How safe is it really to purchase an account these days?

I want to buy an account soon and get back into OSRS but I'm seeing all of these outrages on Reddit that people are being banned all the time, etc. So a Mod confirms that their account wasn't legit or they botted, and you know how the reddit sheep herd is, they chastise and condemn the OP. I know that in years past this was never a huge issue and I've purchased many accounts that were even botted on but it seems like Jfagex is really addy on detecting these occurrences now. How bad is it - what's the risk in actuality of a purchased account being banned?

Generally there are almost no bans at all when purchasing accounts. Its only happened once to me in over a thousand accounts sold.

The real risk lays in the possibility of an account getting recovered. It's not very difficult to retrieve an account that's been sold. Buying from people with a very high reputation minimizes this risk. Do expect to pay higher prices in this case. Lower reputable members often sell accounts for less, but the risk is higher.

@Zora hit the nail on the head - you may also see a scenario (very rare but likely) where the account may be locked as 'suspected stolen' right when it is purchased but a simple unlock will do the trick. I'd error on the side of paying more for higher rep'd/safer accounts than paying less and getting scammed. However, it's all about what you are willing to pay and who you are willing to purchase from realistically.

What about buying GP guys? This gets a lot of attention on Reddit as well.

Honestly I feel as it's a dice role either way - whatever you can do to minimize 'standing' out is as safe as it can be. High levels on your regular IP would be safer I feel than an all of the sudden different IP & a new account/lower level.

Having GP traded to you on your own home IP address and with the highest level account you have such as a main instead of a newly level 3. I agree with everything they said above. Just depends on who you buy the account from instead of really being banned for purchasing one. From my experience, purchasing gold has been pretty safe for me and I've always traded to my main with no issues.

I've bought several accounts from different reputable members and have mostly had success. By mostly, I mean 90%+ success rate. I've also bought and sold, at this point, tens of billions of GP and have never had a ban from dealing in gold. It's all pretty safe.

Honestly, really well safe. If you find someone that is verified you should not have any problem. I myself plan to open an Account Shop soon and I hand train all my own accounts and keep it as safe as possible for when the account's are ready for sale.
Just use common sense when finding an account shop!

I'd still consider it incredibly safe with locks and bans happening VERY rarely.
