Graphic Saturdays Feedback

I'd like to have your guys' input on how the SS is ran. Feel free to post theme suggestions, contest suggestions, and anything else that you think would better the experience. I'll answer all questions and approve or deny any changes should you feel like posted your thoughts here.

It was honestly really good and I don't venture into GFX Section that much, the only thing can that would make it better for next time would be more participants.

 

Keep it freestyle for a while.

I liked it, however there should be a prize of something.

Even a weekly rank, I don't know. It's cool I liked it.

 

You'd have to ask an administrator, it's nothing I can do. I think a cash prize is enough incentive, as well as the hall of fame thread I'll be making

 

Have you thought about advertising on any other RS communities or anything like that? I would say TagFreak but those guys are just general dickheads.

I like the competition and I will be posting a piece in the next one, but I don't think we're going to get many of the active marketers poting. I think there might be two people in the market that ever know how to compose a signature besides the fact that most of them aren't even active on sythe outside of bumping their market threads, so that attempt is really futile.

I don't think freestyle should remain. Traditionally the first competition is freestyle to draw out the competitors and then you go into themes. A theme in a signature competition really helps decide the true skill of people. I think possibly a stock of the week and a render of the week and you choose between one or the other and use it to make a signature/LA. That would be a true showing of the ability to use basic GFX techniques.

Also, I don't think a rank is needed but I think maybe a small emblem that could be dispalyed in one's signature would be fine.

I also think this should not only incorporate signatures but also Large Art, Photomanipulation, Business designs, and things like that. Like an example of a business design competition is that you post a brief for a 'client' for a logo/web design/banner/things like that and then each piece is made from the description.

 

The original plan I had-- which I'll probably stick to-- is freestyle this week, and themed from here on out. If not a theme, then there will be some other abnormal stipulation such as vertical, B&W, typography, large art, etc.
If you guys have a certain style, theme, or effect you'd like to see one of these weeks, just post it here and I'll add it into my bank of possible contests.

And one week a signature competition (e.g the ones on sythe) with a set name and content.

You did a good job, MohtasaUnique. But, I'd probably advertise it around the forum more, if you hadn't posted the link in the IRC, I doubt I would have looked at it. If you want, you could try making a thread in Community General, and asking a global to make a forum-wide announcement (when there is no important announcements), that might increase user awareness. Other than that, it was fine. For themes, maybe you could try "smudge," "sprite," "abstract," "c4d," and/or "grunge" for Signature Saturdays. And, for contest suggestions, I've always thought the GFX worm was cool. Anyway, you're doing a really good job, MohtasaUnique, keep up the great work!

lolol granted I did coerce them to join by screaming "FFS JUST USE PAINT THEN" when they were reluctant.

I was thinking of using the advertisement feature to announce it, but it's really only for security issues like hackings or other stuff. I'll ask though

 

It seems like a good start at least - I'll definitely be participating once I get my desktop back and I can reopen my shop etc. In particular it's an opportunity to force c4d/market users to learn tags which is definitely a good move for improving the general quality of all the GFX made here

I think that the whole amateur entries such as the I heart cheese one etc are pretty childish... just my opinion. Anyways like Noam said its a really good way to get some of the gfx artists here on sythe to learn how to do traditional signatures/tags which in a way includes me xD

If you want to create graphics for the SS threads, here's a list of what I need:
• A "Signature Saturday" logo for the top of all related threads
• A fancy trophy design for the top of the hall of fame thread
• Another design for the contributor section of the hall of fame, smaller than the trophy design

Yeah, if you post in Community General, I think that has a better chance of getting more serious contenders than the previous forum you placed the thread in. Also, you can use the announcements for different things, but it is primarily used for hackings, and such. But, if there isn't an important announcement, then I think it can be made.

Also, whenever I see amazing signatures such as Botmau5's, I feel kinda discouraged to make an entry, because of how amazing that signature is. Maybe if you make it to submit your entry anonymously, you could see more entries. Just a thought.

 

It's a slippery slope that I'd considered quite a bit before you just now mentioned it. Botmau5's entrees are pretty top notch, and we don't have many who can contend. But also, if I make all submissions anonymous via PM and don't show how many has entered until the end of the submission period, people who don't read original posts will look at the competition and this "oh hey, that's really fucking boring, no one is entering--- *x-out*"

I bandied about the idea of having users post their submissions as per usual, but having a plugin that disallows the images to be viewed by regular users until they're approved and to be replaced with a generic "SS ENTRY IMAGE" graphic until I do approve it, but I wouldn't know how to do it, or where I'd find such a plugin. I'd bother Sythe or an administrator about it, but I really want my IM suggestion to go through first since it'd have a very heavy impact on scamming (which is a larger issue than discouraged SS entrees)

 

Yeah, I've thought about that, too. Why not make the user post "I submitted my entry to MohtasaUnique though a PM," or something of that variation on the thread. Even if someone could see if a user like Botmau5 submit an entry, there is still a chance that they could make a better one. If you don't like that, you could always just add to the original post on how many people joined the competition. But, if you don't feel these ideas will work, than a plugin after the decision on your IM suggestion might be a good idea.

 

Seems you won't have to worry about beating botmau5 anymore. I was PM'd proof the signature he posted this week was ripped and altered to say "Sythe" instead of "Drop" in the PSD tutorial here:

Are you sure he didn't just follow that tutorial?

I think along with the pieces the PSDs should be submitted to prove authenticity.
