how will our generation compare to older ones?

okay, this is something i have been thinking about for a longggg time. as far as i can tell, the media(tv, music, internet) has gotten much more lenient on what they allow. for example, most politicians grew up in a time where i love lucy(and shows like it) were the most popular thing on tv, and most people didnt have any access to anything worse. nowadays, shows like weeds, desperate housewives, and other more mature stuff is becoming normal stuff for kids to watch on tv, and the internet has opened up a whole new can o' worms on the subject of mature content. and most kids have access to stuff like that. do you think that these and other factors will influence our generation as far as lawmaking, and general society is concerned? for example, with all the hype about legalizing weed, the online petitions, and outright festivals dedicated to just marijuana have become well known(largely through the internet).

im just wondering, do you think it will affect us in a positive or negative way? or will it even change anything?

Evolution, plain and simple, has happened each generation and will carry on to do so. It's way a of life. In the end as humans we adapt, be it our kids or grand children, what one person see's as mature content another person doesn't it's will be down to the parents to make that judgement.

For the most part our generation has common wants/beliefs.. so when we are old we will choose what we want in our lives..Also i believe our generation will not be so backward/closed minded like our grandparents, They dont seem to be fond of change.

To be honest I think it will be a negative thing since everybody is based on tech. nowadays.
For example, in math students can't even do simple and have to use the phones and such to get the answers.

i think our generation is pretty bad, most of our youth is in a cloud and believes what everyone tells them and doesnt think ahead. Older generations had bad things but they weren't as open and distributed as they are today IMO. But only time will tell how we can change as a people.

Our generation is gonna be AWESOME! We're so smart and technology is advancing. Cures for things that have been a mystery to the world for centuries are gonna come and we're just gonna continue to get smarter although kids are being taught some really bad stuff.

Our Generation don't think as much as our parent's Generation does. We do get influenced by Media and advertisement much more than the latter.

We are always wanting instant results and therefore are impatient.

I think because of things like the internet people are generally more educated; but laziness has probably increased for similar reasons

I think with anything good, comes something bad. So it depends if you weigh the goods (possible cures, longer life expectancy, etc) higher than the bads (media, high divorce rates, etc).

being so dependent on technology is dangerous. say a massive solar flare was to hit earth and destroy electronics for days/months/years. we would essentially be cavemen.

also cant wait to be like 80 years old ridin down the street listening to rap.. xD

how will our generation compare to older ones?

I have no idea. I've been wondering the same thing but the only conclusion I can come to is that we won't know until we get there. We live in an unpredictable time, a big cultural melting pot, and I feel like our generation lacks an identity.

And to the guy above me: while we may be very attached to our electronics, I don't think we're completely dependent on them. If we were to lose them for an extended period of time I think we'd be able to manage without them. We're pretty intuitive creatures for the most part.

    Lacks identity?

If anything, I think our generation has shown it's own unique identity, we are the internet generation. The age of widespread and available technology, look back thirty years ago and how dependent people were on technology and compare that to now with things like computers in order to carry out everyday tasks or their jobs. I totally disagree that you say we could function without electronics, they are now a fundamental and huge part of modern day Western society.

Look at how progressive our society is, whether that be relating to sexual equality, gay rights and racial equality. Of course our society and world is still flawed in many ways but again looking back retrospectively we have came so far as a generation, you just have to look at the USA, despite people's current opinion of him and his policies now we are the first generation where an African American ran one of the most powerful countries in the world.

Take into account the widespread riots and demonstrations around the world against governments and regimes, another infallible point that we live in a society which doesn't just sit back and let the people who 'control' us do what they see fit, we can think and fight for ourselves and what we believe is right. Our use of the internet as a way to fight back.

Despite what our generation is, it's flaws and admirable points, you simply cannot say we live in an age which lacks identity.

I completely agree with this guys post.

Humans are getting smarter with each generation, we're evolving to become better at everything we do.
If a child is brought up properly then TV shows won't influence them.
I've watched some freaky things in the past and I am yet to imitate any of them.

I think each generation is more advanced than the last but we still need to hold on to old values the older generation has.

how will our generation compare to older ones?

You're right. I probably rushed that statement. Or maybe it was just my own cynical prejudice toward my generation. I feel that we're engulfed in complacency. Yes, there's much conflict in the world, just as there always has been, and through the luxury widespread and available technology, those problems are readily available for all to see. But who's taking initiative to do something about them? The world is a much bigger place than it was 30 years ago. The power of one has been divided into a fraction and made disproportionate to its available resources.
Someone above me said we need to hold on to the values of the previous generation. I feel as if there needs to be a radical change in those ideals. The "exponential times" have left We the People miles behind the consequences of progress. Something's gotta change.

And again, while we may be dependent on electronics, they aren't surgically attached to us. Iphones aren't life support (yet...). Without our electronics I think we'd just revert to our basic survival instincts. Foraging, hunting, etc.

umm...hate to break it to you buddy, but...if humans came from africa, the first country(the most powerful) would have been ruled by a black guy..

but i do agree with you. while the internet has got a mind of its own, it has given our generation an identity, be it for the better or worse..

I think our generation is an important generation as we are sort of predating colonization of other planets (mars particularily), however we aren't going to be a generation of important practical inventions, but more the theories that will lead to these practical inventions.

We seem to be headed on the right path, but realistically any generation from the development of nuclear weapons until we are safely able to colonize other star systems is an important generation in that its important that we don't allow petty close minded individuals to allow us to cause nuclear winter on our only habitable planet.

I like this thread , because my grandma was just explaining to me how " Back in the Days " You couldn't have a boyfriend or a girlfriend , and a beating was known as " Flipping the Switch "

The music is different like , rock bands. ( For example )

The Beatles - Old Rock Band
Three Days Grace - New Band

how will our generation compare to older ones?

Honestly, I think our generation will make progress slower than what we do today. A lot slower.

Who are the great minds of the world right now and of the past? It doesn't look like our generation would be able to compete with them. We have better equipment and technology provided by them, but it still doesn't seem like we would come close.

Let's say 30 years ago. People were hard working students, they had little things to entertain them for long and it just meant that they focused on work more. They had more time to think about things and invent things.

What about now? You're in a class of 50+ students. Do you honestly think that much of them would actually be as great as the past minds? How many people are always out, with friends, partying, doing drugs etc. It leaves little people really. Not to mention that there are things that distracts them from becoming great. Such as the internet, TV etc. If they were interested and read/watched interesting things that would benefit their future on TV or the internet then they would have a chance. But right now, how many of them are spending a lot of their time on Facebook, MMORPGs etc.

I'm not saying our generation are dumber than the past, but they won't achieve great things with all the distractions around them.

    tl;dr
The past generations had less distractions. They didn't party, do drugs, have internet, mobiles etc.
Our generation has too much distractions. Party too much, does drugs, internet for long periods of time, and people spends a long time on their mobile.

These distractions aren't benefiting them in any way, it's only slowing them down. The potential of the great minds of today are pretty much getting slowed down and ruined.

Please keep in mind that I'm talking about how our generation would help the world progress better and faster as we get closer to the future.
