Starting A Blog
Hi, I wanted to start a blog using my own webhost and domain.
I don't want to use sites like xanga or tumblr.
How can this be possible?

Re: Starting A Blog
A PHP based blog system is really quite a small task.
I'd strongly advise against using applications like wordpress or jumbla if you are looking to blog on your own.
Add me at " [email protected]" and I can help you out in more detail.

Did you miss the part where I said that I don't want to use those types?

Re: Starting A Blog
Our time zones seem to match up really poorly.
I could look at doing a video tutorial if you'd prefer; or just continue to hope we catch each other online.

Why advise against something that was made to make the whole blogging experience so much easier? If it's a blog you want, Wordpress is second to none. If you want a more functional site, you should look towards other open source CMS's or look for someone to make you a custom solution.
For a domain, I'd say namecheap. For hosting, I'd say iPage.

Wordpress is second to a lightweight, fully functional, database driven blog.
Wordpress is a bulky piece of software, which has much useless code and is not as ideal as people think. With 30 minutes of coding, you can have a fully functioning, to the same extent as wordpress (the bloging aspect, the CMS is another story), blog.
The problem is everyone thinks this software is the most ideal way to do things, the most efficient, and the only viable solution. These people are gravely mistaken.
Wordpress is slow, and over inflated, especially if you are only using it as a blog.

The OP is asking some basic questions, which is perfectly fine, but judging by what he is asking, I'm pretty sure he doesn't have much coding experience and probably doesn't want to fork out $$$ to pay someone for something slightly quicker than a free alternative.
You'd be wrong to say that Wordpress isn't one of the best solutions around for someone who wants to blog easily, but has little to no coding experience. It has all the functions you'll ever need + a vast community for support and modifications.

Not to thread jack, but this also could benefit the person interested. How much should it cost to get someone to make a wordpress site?

It is highly dependant on the person. If you were choosing wordpress, I'd suggest doing it yourself, with a large enough community and tutorials it would take a little but you could do it.
If you are paying someone it ranges from $20 - a couple hundred $ depending on the level of customization.

If you do want to pay someone, it really varies depending on the level of customization you would like.

You're right. For someone with little to no coding expereince who doesn't want to pay, wordpress is great.
The difference is however, I am offering him to provide him with the code for free. The reason being that I would prefer to see someone with a site not running a bulky platform where there is no need.
I don't disagree that wordpress is handy, but the results (in my opinion) are not worth the cost.

Two sources for relatively good tutorials; what they lack of course is layout.
There are a number of ways to approach this: if you know about HTML, you can of course design your own; there are loads and loads and loads of free templates online, etc.
if you need any further help, PMing me could be a viable solution; I am sorry I've been very busy of the late.

Thanks a lot man.
I know a litttle bit of HTML and I can always learn from other codes, so that shouldn't be a problem.
