You looking for price-wise?
Dell is cheaper.
Gaming-wise, Alienware is the way to go!
If you're looking for a school laptop/computer then I say get a Dell, but if you're looking to also be gaming, running lots of programs etc... then get an Alienware.

Re: Alienware or Dell?
Alienware is owned by Dell.
Buying an alienware pc is basically buying a fancy case with a dell in it.
Dell is like buying a dell.
I'd say neither, but if you have to choose one of those take the dell.

Alienware,
It's an awesome gaming laptop, but I'm just saying that cause those are the only comps I got in my house

Of coarse, but Dell, LEGIT Dell laptops/desktops are cheap, but they also suck.
Alienware, part of Dell, runs smoother, faster and better only because it's built to be used for gaming AND because they use 3rd party parts not Dell's own.
I agree that they are both overpriced, but out of the two, Alienware would be best for speed+gaming while regular Dell laptopdesktops will be better for school/work/etc...
I've owned both, I have to say that Alienware is far better then regular Dell laptops. Dell laptops have died, crashed, overheated and just flat out slowed down when I used them, Alienware laptops also slowed down, but it lasted me 3 years before it did.
And I do heavy downloading, so I had a lot of files coming in and out.
If you want it cheap, get a regular Dell, if you have money to spend get an Alienware.
If you can choose another, then please skip both of these and find another company.

Re: Alienware or Dell?
Both garbage, I wouldn't buy either. If you want a decent computer and can't build your own buy an Hp. Like Lym said both are made by the same company Dell, which has had a consistent reputation of making terrible computers. If you want a computer that crashes all the time then i suppose you picked the right company.

Re: Alienware or Dell?
HP is the way to go for basic needs, it can run a fair amount of games as well on lower end detail but if price isn't an issue I'd say step-up and buy yourself an Asus, bought myself one about a month back, haven't been disappointed yet.
I have no problem running lots of RuneScape bots while running WoW full screen with details cranked or World of Tanks with details cranked, I never drop below 25 FPS.

Just build your own computer. Alienware is basically just an overpriced dell with a fancy case. And well, dell is shit.

It's overpriced because the parts inside aren't FULLY Dell parts, they're 3rd party parts.
Dell just orders parts, puts their fancy case on and sells it as Alienware.
That's why its for gaming.

Having 3rd party parts inside it doesn't justify overpricing it.... They charge like $200 for a 1TB HDD that I can go buy on Newegg right now for $60. Just an example. Not to mention they more than likely get things at a massive discount for buying in bulk. Alienwares are not even that good for gaming until you get to the ridiculous price range, like at least $2k+. Guarantee my build (which cost me ~$1300-$1500) would have been EASILY $2500 from them.
@OP
Don't buy either, they both suck ass. Alienware laptops are overpriced like at least 1.5x-1.75 what they should be, Dell laptops are alright but definitely not the best. ASUS has been doing really well lately, I would much rather purchase a laptop from them or Toshiba before Dell/Alienware. As for desktop PCs, building your own is the way to go. All manufacturer desktops (yes, including Alienware) are hunks of shit.

Re: Alienware or Dell?
I'd rather buy a Dell than an HP. My HP laptop broke like 6789438 times but my mom's 10 year old Dell still works fine. >_>.
Alien Wares are big and annoying. If you are rich and really need to be able to game anywhere, then there fine but it is kinda like dragging a desktop with you.

Asus. Same specs as any alienware with a more reasonable price. I own one and it's definitely one of my best technological investments.

Right, so don't buy one. They are also going to be exiting the consumer market it looks like.

Re: Alienware or Dell?
Yeah, I've had many problems with HP. Their support site is shit as well, it took me 3 days to figure out they had the wrong drivers on their site.
I've had a much better experience with Dell, their prices are fair and they Alienware can be very powerful provided your willing to spend some monies.
I would only say buy a Dell if you can't build a system yourself as that is ALWAYS a cheaper option.
