Heres a report:

The father of a British student whose death has been linked to excessive video playing is calling for greater awareness of the dangers of game-playing.

Chris Staniforth, a 20-year-old student, died in May from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which can form during long periods of immobility and can kill if the clots travel to the lungs.

His death is being linked to excessive use of his Xbox gaming console. He would regularly spend up to 12 hours playing games.

Chris' father, David Staniforth, told The Sun newspaper, "Games are fun and once you've started playing, it's hard to stop. Kids all over the country are playing these games for long periods - they don't realise it could kill them."

He is now is campaigning for greater awareness of the risk posed by their excessive use.

A statement by Microsoft, which manufactures the XBox console, said: "We have always encouraged responsible game play through our education campaigns such as Play Smart and Play Safe.

"We recommend that gamers take periodic breaks to exercise as well as make time for other pursuits."

This isn't the first death related to gaming. In 2005, a South Korean man died after playing online games for three days without taking a break



I can never play games for 12 hours straight, may be its for the best..
and thats why you stick to pc.

I'm with you there, though I have friends who could play for days if given the opportunity. I believe a raise of awareness is in order though I think many parents views on video games are too extreme.

Wow that is pretty sad to hear. Hope this is a lesson that too much of anything isnt good for you.
It is actually common around this generations for gamers to play excessively without even thinking about what could happen.

If you allow your kid to play 12hrs/day it's your fault. We all know that's not healthy, that's no surprise. I sometimes host a 'no-life weekend' in which we game for 24hrs over the course of 2 days. I don't do it too often, but we go on and on and on (we do sleep for like 8 hrs and eat at a table. lol). My parents don't allow me to game the day after. Now those are responsible parents.
