The noobs guide too Google Sketchup
The noob's guide to Google Sketchup
(I did this in 3 minutes, imagine what you could do in an hour!)
Introduction
G'day, welcome to my 3rd guide!
I'm sure 99% of you have heard of Google, but Google Sketchup?
Google Sketchup is one of Google's lesser known programs. It basically is a 3D graphics drawing program. It is not as professional as others, Such as Blender, (*Instert Links for Blender Guides*,)
but it is much simpler in terms of understanding and use.
My guide will show you how to: Download and Install Google Sketchup, explain what can be done with Google Sketchup.
Contents
I: Introduction
II: Contents
III: What is Google Sketchup?
IV: Where and how can I get Sketchup?
V: What can you do with Google Sketchup?
VI: The Basics of Sketchup
VII: Acknowledgements
What is Google Sketchup?
I'm sure at least 99% of you have heard of Google, but Google Sketchup?

Google Sketchup is one of Google's lesser known programs. It basically is a 3D graphics drawing program. It is not as professional as others, Such as Blender, (*Instert Links for Blender Guides*,)
but it is much simpler in terms of understanding and use.
There are two versions of Google Sketchup, the free version, and the paid version, (more commonly known as Google Sketchup Pro. For more information on getting Sketchup Pro, I'll refer you to this link.)
Where and how can you get Sketchup?
Google Sketchup's homepage can be found Here.
On there homepage, there are several interesting things. The most important one for the moment is the "Download Google Sketchup" Button. This is a big blue button on the top right hand corner of the page.
What can you do with Google Sketchup?
The first thing i'd like to point out with Google Sketchup is: DO NOT THIS PROGRAM FOR A PROFESSIONAL JOB. It is to basic and you'd be much better off with A paid, more sophisticated program. Sketchup is better for entertainment towards yourself or others, and maybe some small school projects.
Not only can you create things, you can download/upload graphics to the Google Sktechup 3D warehouse.
So, you've downloaded Sketchup, but, what can you draw?
The answer to that is ANYTHING. If it exists, you can draw it.
However, examples of things to do include:
1. Houses, are great to start up on,
2. Cars, not for the beginner, but a LOT of fun,
3. People, even starting up with something close to a stick figure is good.
But as I pointed out, you can literally do anything.
The Basics of Sketchup
- Insert Circle button. Using this will add in A 2D circle.
- Paint bucket, this tool allows you to colour in your drawings. There is a range of textures and colours.
- Push/Pull tool, This allows you to make 2D objects turn 3D and increase/decrease the height and width of 3D objects.
- Insert rectangle button, Using this will add in A 2D rectangle or square.
- Move/Copy tool, this handy tool allows you to move objects around.
- Tape measure, this measures distance of a certain object (or part of a certain object.) It can be adjusted into: Feet, Inches, Centimetres and metres.
- Eraser, one of the most important tools in the toolbox. Use the eraser to delete unwanted objects/parts of objects.
- Pan tool, use this to move the screen around.
- Rotate button, allows you to rotate your graphics.
- Pencil/Line, this tool allows you to draw perfect straight lines.
- Arc, use this tool to draw curved lines.
- Zoom in/out button, this can be used to zoom in and out.
Google - For making Sketchup,
Google Sketchup 3D Warehouse - For the helpful images I used in my guide,
Lukef555, Magic Arrow & Plznate - For going through all my guides and telling me where improvement is necessary,
You - For taking the time to read my guide!
(None of these Images, excluding the opening house image, are mine. They were found on the Google Sketchup 3D Warehouse. I do not claim them as mine in any way, shape or form. I have used these to show examples of what can be done on Google Sketchup.)

Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, I plan on creating a few tutorials on this sketchup later on. Also, thanks for checking through the grammar. I plan on doing a grammar check on all my guides before I Pm a HUE.

Re: The noobs guide too Google Sketchup
Sweet guide, and opened my eyes to a program I honestly had no idea existsed, wow!
Like the use of colors and explanations. Could go a bit more in depth, but after all it IS a noobs' guide. For that, nice job.
The only negative I'd say is how basic it is. You seem to have a nice grasp on the program yet you only point out the basic "tooltip" properties and show examples of projects. Why not create a guide on how to make something simple, like that house?

Re: The noobs guide too Google Sketchup
I'm absolutely loving that three years on, this guide is still getting complaints and compliments. Glad to see it helping some Sythe members out.
Maybe one day I'll have time to revamp it.
