Does 0.999~ = 1? [oldskool debate]

I'm reviving this oldschool debate. The last one was archived, but I think that there never was a definite answer reached.

I believe it does, and here are some of the reasons why:

If X = 0.999~
then 10*X = 9.999~
So X-10X = 9.0
Therefore (X-10X)/9 = 1

Also 1/3 = 0.333~
2/3 = 0.666~
Therefore 3/3 = 0.999~

Also 1/3 = 0.333~
(0.333~)*3 = 0.999~
(1/3)*3 = 3/3 = 1

 

Simple put, no. Though with certain mathematical principles you can really make any number equal any other number you want. In a definite system .999 equals .999, not . 998 and not 1. Though it may be so close that it is rounded to 1.

I know with the ~ it means about, but you get the general point I was making.

Let me use this example. Einstein said that you can go .999999999999 the speed of light, but not the speed of light. If the .999~ equals one it would break the laws of physics.

 

Einstein was partially wrong about relativity, scientists found out that light and particles can exceed the predicted speed limit.

~ doesn't mean approximately, it means infinitely continuous

 

Point is still valid though because it was just the predicted speed limit not the scientific fact limit of the speed of light. Also 3/3 = 1, not .999. The whole number 3 will go into the whole number 3 one times. Therefore your first assumption is wrong.

 

So then why does 1/3*3 = 0.999~? the whole number one should go into the whole number three exactly three times, shouldn't it? It would have to be 0.333~∞~4, and if you say that's true, then 0.999∞[10]= 1

I don't understand what this "debate" is supposed to be about.

3/3 = 1
3/1 * 1/3 = 1
3 * 0.(3) = 1
0.(9) = 1

 

The debate is whether you put stock in real numbers or imaginary theoretical numbers (I forget the mathematical term for an unreal number....)

 

I'm not sure what you are referring to with this, but the above poster is right. There is no debate about this. 0.999... = 1

Yeah, 1/9 = 0.111111111, 2/9 = 0.22222222222222, etc, so logically 9/9 (aka 1) = 0.9999999999999

 

I think our whole concept of numbers is flawed. With the way numbers work currently, there are countless impossibilities. For example, if numbers keep getting smaller and smaller and never end, when I got to punch someone in the face, won't the distance between my hand and their face just keep getting smaller and smaller? It must have an end right? Because surely my hand just connected with his face, or the atoms in my hand hit the atoms in his face, but either way, there must be a set final distance.

 

0.999999 going on for ∞ is not 1.

 

If you have a pizza (1) and you take out .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001~ of the pizza, leaving you .999999999999999999999999(and so on) of the pizza left, you still don't have the whole (1) of the pizza, so no.

 

He's saying .999 (goes on forever), not with a definite number of 9's.

The rest makes sense.

 

Eventhough there are an infinite number of points between your hand and his face, your hand is also covering an infinite number of points.

 

It's been proven that it does equal 1 actually. I was under the impression that it doesn't as well, but then when I tried to do some proofing of it in my maths class, I actually came to the conclusion that 0.9 recurring does equal 1. I've found a wikipedia article on all the different proofs too, I used to fractional proof and the algebra proof too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0.999...

I know it's hard to get your head around, because an equals sign means exactly the same as, but what you need to remember is that it's 0.99999 recurring, and that means an everlasting amount of 9's at the end of the decimal. I believe logic has to take place here, I mean... proofs show it is equal, and common logic would show that 0.9 recurring is also equal to 1.

I know some people say that it's not equal because it's two different numbers either side, but it's actually not in fact. 0.9 recurring is the same as one, just like 2x3 = 18/3. If you were to work out equations using either 0.9 recurring or using 1, the answer would be the same and so I believe 0.9999.. = 1

This thread should honestly be closed; the only thing that's being shown is people's inability to understand math.

 

There is no argument here, guys. It is an established fact that the two quantities are equal.

 

Does 3/3 = 1? Does 1/3 = .333333...? Does 3/3 = 1? Duh.
