Ok so I have a project this school year, it's to make an online game like chess, checkers, black jack, whatever, so I picked chess of course now the game isn't the problem, I have the game completely finished but was wondering how to separate the client and server also how to make the server

How to separate the client and the server? They are different programs, that's how. Writing a client and a server to go with it takes some planning and isn't a simple "how to". If you have specific questions I'm sure people would be glad to answer them.

Well my teacher said we have to "separate" the client form the server so I don't really know what to do

Then read about it rather then post vague things like "how do I make java server". Googling "java server" returns http://download.oracle.com/javase/tu...entServer.html

When I learnt how to do this, it was best described by a Client/Server Chat.

Take a look at this example: http://pguides.net/java/tcp-client-server-chat
(Not the best, but it's the first one I found)

For what I imagine you have to do, it wouldn't actually take that much modification to your code.
