As far as the computer being an instrument, that's arguable. I'd be wrong if I said it wasn't "theoretically an instrument", but I think that it lacks the uniqueness and the soul that something like a guitar brings out. We could debate it all night, but anyone can push a button on a computer.

Even your computer couldn't hit that heartbreaking solo that Page could hit on that guitar. And it can't make you cry like Mike McCready can.
Its all accessibility imo, back when you had to grind out local shows and what not to be able to record a CD, you had to develop your skills and creativity, but now you can simple record yourself playing on your computer and press your own CDs making it a much easier industry to get into, which results in a complete bloating of content.

People who make music on computers are composers.

Bach didn't play all the instruments, but he composed masterpieces. Are you implying Bach is not a true musician.

Ambient music is fucking beautiful.

these are two dubstep producers.

anyone hating can suck my balls, these two songs are modern masterpieces, especially in mcdonalds.

There is nothing "wrong" with today's music. It's a subjective term, some people will like different types of music than others. One individual could love modern-day rap, and someone could love older, classical music. I'm sure some people in the "older" days hated the music in that age, like how some people don't like our "modern-day" music. Besides, it's not like every musician is autotuned, singers like Adele rule the music industry with their voice. You'll just have to find the type of music you like the most, and go with it.

I'm sorry but I just fail to see this. She is a average singer at best and songwriting wise I fail to profound hidden message from " Let's have some fun, this beat is sick. I wanna take a ride on your disco stick" I mean is it under the shaft? because I ain't going anywhere near there bro. but seriously there is nothing amazing about her other than the fact that she is still famous.

lyrics from a popular beatles song

"Birthday"

They say it's your birthday
It's my birthday too, yeah
They say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you

Ah
Ah
Ah
Come on
Come on

Yes we're going to a party party
Yes we're going to a party party
Yes we're going to a party party

I would like you to dance (Birthday)
Take a cha-cha-cha-chance (Birthday)
I would like you to dance (Birthday)
Dance yeah

Oh
Come on

I would like you to dance (Birthday)
Take a cha-cha-cha-chance (Birthday)
I would like you to dance (Birthday)
Oh dance! Dance

They say it's your birthday
Well it's my birthday too, yeah
They say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you

Bach's piano didn't include integrated midi sounds and effects. I'm only saying this because I've been recording music for a long time and I know what goes into making a dubstep song, but it's just too simple for my liking. I feel like there is just other music out there that people could really learn from, but they miss out on that because they're more into how the beats make you feel like you're walking under water when your on XTC and flying 85 down the highway.

When I listen to Beethoven, I can feel the music from the chord progressions, the tempo, etc. I can almost understand the mood of each division of his song. But when I hear a dubstep song, I just hear a bunch of robot noises being thrown from the left to the right channel, and then random clips from some video.

As far as gaga and that beaver kid, come on this is modern America. We all know they obviously aren't writing their own songs so I'm not sure why they even deserve a place in this discussion.

Modern music sucks, because stuff like the new pop songs = I'm pretty sure even a 5th grader could write better lyrics.

I disagree with you about dubstep. In every genre, there will be true artists, and hacks. The hacks are usually louder and more visible. I don't think its fair to put burial in the same category as shitty brostep. His songs are incredibly complex, and aren't just FX piled on wobble bass. Burial's production process is fucking strange. He uses Soundforge. He doesn't use a sequencer. He has fucking skill. It isn't the computer making burial's songs spectacular, it's him. Also james blake is formally trained. He's a jazz/classical musician making dubstep. It might be computerized, but it's still art.

for me, it's all about the feeling I get when I listen to something.
I usually feel cold and empty when I listen to a top 40 radio station. I don't mean it figuratively when I say it gives me a headache. I was in the car with my family the other day, and Ke$ha came on the radio. Normally I try not isolate myself when I'm in the car with my family, but I couldn't stand more than 10 seconds of that song, so I plugged in my headphones tried to shut out the that crap.

It's something I can't help. I'm super paranoid when it comes to music. I instantly separate all the instruments, vocals, every little nuance and listen to them individually. However, it's how they blend together that matters most, and when I hear stuff like this

it just doesn't bode well inside of me. It's annoying; everything from the subject matter to sound of it. I just don't understand how music about getting wasted or being a materialistic dumbass is so appealing.

I listen to nearly all types of music (jazz, hip hop, rock, pop, electronic, latin, and everything in between). The genre isn't important, it's the actual music that's important.

Now when I hear something like this,

you can hear the influence of more than one style of music, and it sounds amazing. The rhythm's smooth and upbeat, and Ray always manages to accompany it with some really beautifully crafted and flowing guitar melodies. To me what makes it great is its simplicity. I think the best type of music is that which makes the most out of the least, though that isn't to say there aren't musicians out there who make great music using complex song structures (check out The Mars Volta)

Also, commercial music by definition is music that's meant to be popular. Music for the masses isn't ever going to go away, so you'll always have people who dislike it solely for what it is. Of course there have been times when popular music was good, but that's a different story.

My point is, if you make music to gain popularity, then I don't believe you're making music at all; you're either setting or following a trend, and trends don't last. Trends will always come and go. The best music will always stay under the radar, because it's pretty hard to maintain artistic integrity and have commercial appeal. Few artists are able to do that.

I guess that's true, but I think that the computer is just a instrument like all the other instruments, with many differents sounds.

What do you think?
Listen to "we are young" or "somebody I used to know" and others 50+ times and tell me you don't want to bang you're head against a brick wall.
