Default Changing tastes in music

I'm curious to see how your tastes in music have changed over the years. Just gonna list a bunch of the artists by how old I was when I listened to them heavily

12-14
(classic rock mostly)

AC/DC
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Steve Miller Band
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
Blue Oyster Cult
Boston
Rush (probably my favorite at the time)
The Who
The Doors
Aerosmith
Metallica
Iron Maiden

14-16
(a lot of 80's/90's "alternative" rock/post-punk)

Nirvana (was obsessed with them for a long time)
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Smashing Pumpkins
Jane's Addiction
Foo Fighters
Stone Temple Pilots
The Ramones
Alice in Chains
Rage Against the Machine
Mudhoney
Dinosaur Jr.
Missions of Burma
Husker Du
Pavement
Sebadoh
The Replacements
MF Doom (I started to get into a little bit of Hip Hop around this time)

17-now
(my have tastes have diversified somewhat, lingering on the jazz/psychedelia sort of thing)

The Mars Volta
At the Drive In
Hum
Beck
Radiohead
Gorillaz
OFWGKTA (haven't been listening them for a while, though I plan to)
Juggaknots
Flying Lotus
Sunny Day Real Estate
Pink Floyd
John Coltrane
Tommy Guerrero (fuckin love this guy)
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Dead Meadow (and these guys)
El-P
Dave Brubeck
Skalpel
Cannibal Ox
Blackstar
Heiruspecs
Cafe Tacuba
Ray Barbee & The Mattson 2 (and these guys too)
Madlib

... and I'm probably leaving some stuff out that I can't think of atm

so yeah, I still listen to some of the stuff from the first two "eras" from time to time, but what I'm really into at the moment is Tommy Guerrero, Dead Meadow, and the BJM.

Feel free to post a few of your favorites. You don't need to be as in-depth as I was

Whatever was on Rock Band
16-18
Guns N' Roses, almost exclusively
18-19(now)
Eminem
Young Money
Jay-Z

Around when I turned 18 was when I became very interested in lyricism and writing my own lyrics. Rap, even bad rap that I listen to, just reeks of creativity and lyricism. Nothing better to put a smile on my face.

I use to be all into rap, back in high school. Since I graduated, and started singing/playing piano myself I have leaned more towards pop/classical music. I listened to rap from like age 8 - 17, then pop/classical to this day (17 - current age). Been playing piano for 8 years now though.

Favorite rapper was: Eminem

Now favorite singer: Ellie Goulding

You know hip-hop and rap are the same genre? I can't believe the amount of people who still don't know this. Hip-hop=rap+beat.

You just pointed out the difference. Rap is more of a branch off of hip hop. Rap is hip hop but hip hop isn't rap. It's like saying Deathcore is metal. Any deathcore fan is probably into metal but few metal fans are into deathcore.

Of course there is a difference, but it's still the same genre. Actually hip-hop is rap, because it has rapping in it unless it's just an instrumental. You can have rap without a beat though, but then it wouldn't be hip-hop. Rapping is something you do. There are different types like trip-hop, jazz rap, death rap, etc, which are all branches of hip-hop. So any song you hear that has rapping and a beat in it is hip-hop. I guess you could call it rap since it does have rapping in it, but it's still technically incorrect. Saying you listen to both hip-hop and rap doesn't really make sense.

I don't know as much as you about this, but isn't deathcore still considered a type of metal, but with hardcore influences?

My point is you can still favour one more than the other :P I like hip hop that has a good bassline and beat but don't really like rap as much because theres not really anything else to really enjoy other than the lyrics and the artist's way of speaking them. But that's not to say I don't like rap in my hip hop, you get the idea. And Deathcore is technically considered a branch of metal but it's basically the production of two subgenres of metal coming together, which makes the actual metal in it pretty diluted. If a bunch of deathcore bands were putting on a show together it would be misleading to call it a metal show.

11-13 - Mostly chart music, I would have probably been able to name the new top 40 every week.

13-14 - Grime, mainstream hip-hop

14-16 - Mostly classic/underground/90s hip-hop, old rnb/soul classics and a little bit of folk, soft rock and dubstep whenever I feel like it.
