Ok, here's the deal:

I have a level 20 character with almost exactly 1million gold. He is rank 10 in three different classes, and I have not completed most of the story. So if you're new to the game, you can go through all the quests with a great character, and not have to worry about what you missed.

That being said, if you're not new to the game, that doesn't really hinder you in any way. You still get all the cool stuff.
