hey im trying to get a .gif to work for my avitar. how do i make it work?

Save it as a .gif

Then hit the upload button.
I think they automatically fix the size.

.GIF images can only be uploaded my moderators and administrators.
They are also reserved for donators only.

Yeah you have to donate $5+ and contact a moderator to put it on for you.

I THINK you can have tiny gif files however i'm not entirely sure, and non-donors have a small limit on their avatar file size so it's nearly impossible.
