Should I Learn How To Skate?
Okay well i was thinking of learning how to skate as in skateboarding just as like a form of excercise and maybe transportation if i'm without my car since skateboards are easy to just carry around.
I can ice skate, i can inline skate (or in noob speak; roller blade/roller skate) and i used to skateboard a very TINY bit when i was like 12, as in i'd just roll down this big hill in my street occaisionally and thats it. So yeah i have decent balance already.
Basicly i just want to be able to be able to skate fine, be able to ollie over gutters and shit so like a 30cm high ollie would be enough and maybe be able to grind a bit.
Does anyone know how long that'd take to learn? Since i'm like pretty old now, i don't really want to look like a loser so yeah if it'd take like ages to be able to learn all that then fuck it.
And is skating good excercise anyway or would i just be wasting my time?

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
Inline skating is more intensive, and often makes for speedier transport.

That's true, i still believe a skateboard is more portable. Like, if i wanted to go into a shop, i could just jump off the skateboard and walk in. But if i was inline skating, i'd have to undo all the laces which takes a while.
Also i have hockey skates (i used to play inline hockey) and not aggressive skates. If i had aggressive skates then i probably would since you can grind and everything with aggressive which would make it funner and more 'cool' hahah .

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
Learn to skate. Do it. Now.
Tbh, it's not easy. You'll need to try trick after trick to get one nailed. It gets VERY tedious. You might find yourself wanting to give up. But, when you learn new stuff, it's IMMENSE. Also, if you live in the North, it's coming up to summer, so now'll be a perfect time to learn. =]

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
You can learn an ollie in a day or two. Grinding will take much longer though. Pretty cool that you blade too, I live in the eastcoast now and you're just looked at like a fag, a skateboarders generation now.
Whoever said use a longboard, they're right, better for transportation.
Exercise? ehh.. not much, especially for what you're going to be doing. If you're looking for a good way of transportation and exercise, just get a bike.

Learning to skate honestly won't take long.. If you have a friend in real life who can show you an ollie you could have it down within a few days.

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
Alls depends if you have friends that skate as well. They'll help motivate you by showing you tricks and they can give you pointers as well.

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
If you're already old, I wouldn't really recommend it. It takes ages, not very good mode of transportation, and it isn't really all that fun.
I do know what I'm talking about, I do skate.

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
Thanks for everyones opinions.
I don't really like the idea of a long board, they just don't appeal to me hahah . Also i have a car so i don't really need to travel long distances.
I sold my bike (a diamondback) like 2 weeks ago to my friend since i don't want to ride bikes anymore.
I would basicly just skate to the shops down the road from me if i wanted to get a dvd or something and thats it.
Oh and as for snowboarding, it doesn't snow here. It has NEVER snowed here hahah.
As long as i can just skate normally (i don't care about tricks) and not look like a noob then i'd be happy .

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
It's never too late to learn something new, and from the looks of it, you only want to ride it around and not do extreme tricks with it.
I personally prefer biking. (BMX)

honestly, if you have to ask people on a runescape forum if you should skate you shouldn't even try it...

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
All you should know is skateboarding is HARD. Lots of cut knees, sprained legs, ect. Not a sport for you if you can't enjoy getting injured everyday.
Granted, for some people they hurt themselves just trying to step on the skateboard. How good are you? Can you atleast ride/turn? If so, learning how to ollie will take a few weeks/month or two max, grinding will probably take a lot longer, depending on how fast you can learn things.
I would suggest a BMX bike, but skateboards are cheaper and more convenient. I do both though.
PM me if you want help on anything else skateboarding-related.

Fuck i'm sick of people saying stuff like this.
Just so you know, theres HEAPS of people on this site that never go into the Runescape sections. Also those that play Runescape, STILL HAVE LIVES (or most do anyway). Like 70% of Sythe Runescape players bot, so they've got a shitload of time to actually live life.
Also, i'm asking whether its generally pretty easy to learn. I don't want to go out, buy a sweet deck and trucks, practise for like 2 months and not advance much and so then give up. And then have some dude say "oh yeah, i could've told you it takes like 6 months to get any good". At which point i'll be like "Fuck, I WISH I FUCKING ASKED". So don't come and spam on my thread you pathetic retard.

I don't really know if i can turn on them, i ride them in stores some times so i can ride them, i don't like stand on them and wobble and fall off etc lol. I used to play Ice Hockey so i'm not afraid of getting hurt .
I think i'll see if my friend wants to learn it with me, it'll be funner if both of us learn together. Like a year ago we were looking at some sweet decks and wheels etc and were wishing we could skate just so that we could buy them hahahah.

Re: Should I Learn How To Skate?
I love skateboarding, its fun. If i didnt skateboard i would propolly be one of those jocks whos only enjoyment comes from fucking with people and fighting, it's definitely a good way to spend time. But it really isn't for everybody just give it a shot if you want to keep doing it, keep doing it. Here's a little article from the skateboard mag, it's one of my favorite things to think about when i skate. It really helped me realize that im doing it for fun and not to get sponsored or anything.
ENDLESS
You should learn to skateboard.
It is cheap and fun.
It is something you can do when you are alone
or with friends.
Once you learn, you can hang out late at night in parking lots for hours and hours
(and you don’t even have to be high).
Also you can talk to others about skateboarding
and it will make them think you are cool
and they will give you things
like free stickers, or invitations to parties
with lots of guys at them.
If you get good
you can jump over all sorts of things
like cars, and European streets, and statues, and off small buildings.
and people will take pictures of you
which is nice (for later, to show your kids)
If you get really good,
maybe someone will pay you
to take pictures, and make videos of you jumping off all sorts of crap
and they will put you on billboards
and benches where homeless people sleep
and your name will be on thousands of pairs of shoes.
Maybe you will have a video game with you in it
or a TV show where you shoot your friends with weapons.
Or maybe not.
Maybe you will just keep doing it and no one will really care how good you are
and you will just use your skateboard to ride down the street
to buy some beer
when your “old lady” takes off with the car.
It’s up to you I guess.
Like anything else.
But you should definitely learn.
It will be worth it
in the long run.
I promise.
