    Wire wrapped jewelry

So I've recently come across several people who have been making a lot of money by something called wire wrapping and I thought I'd share this for anyone who might be interested. It's not too common and is usually seen at certain festivals. The market for it is great and always will be because few people actually have the patience for it. I've been doing it for a couple weeks now and already have it down. I'm going to start working on my first real project soon. I found a gem and wire supplier and have everything I need already. It's not easy and takes a lot of time, but it's a lot of fun if you have the attention for it and like working with your hands. It can potentially make you a lot of money too. I have a couple friends who have their own business and this is what they do. Also I might start selling some on here at some point if anyone would be interested. You can also buy them at etsy.com. Of course there are more basic ones that can easily be made, but I'm going for things like these.

Okay maybe not this good, but same idea. This one is going for $3,400 lol.

Yeah they're very unique. That's why I like them so much.

I found those pictures either on Facebook or Etsy. Those two are from Etsy and are for sale. They're like $30-40.

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/1588904...ry&ga_ship_to=US&ga_page=2&ga_search_type=all

Just type in wrapped pendants/jewelry to find stuff on Etsy. If you're interested in spending more and getting one custom made, then you can find people on Facebook that make and sell them.

Here is one guy. He also has tutorials on how to make them.

If you're selling them for $200+ it sounds like a good business, however, if you're making anything less and you're counting this as a job not a hobby i would recommend calculating your productivity and see if it's worth it.

Yeah that one isn't finished yet. It's got a little ways to go. I just posted it to show the process of how they're made.

You'd be surprised. It's a hobby for most, but a job for some and pays well if you get good. Even the cheaper ones are pretty decent money. If you know what you're doing, then you can make one in a couple hours and sell it for $20-50. Once you start making the really nice ones, then you need to learn how to identify gems some. Also it's good to use real gold and sterling silver wire when making the nice ones, which actually isn't that expensive. Once you get really good, then you can finish them pretty quickly and the average one goes for $200-600 depending on the type and number of gems used. I know several people who own their own business selling these things. You can sell them on Facebook, Etsy, or at a lot of festivals. I've even seen people walking around certain areas or sitting at stands in Atlanta. You can actually make great money if you have the patience and skill to get really good at it. I don't have the time to get that into it, but I have sold a few. I get compliments daily on the only one I have left that I made and people offer to buy it all the time. I haven't even had to sell any online because I always sell them to friends or random people throw me offers. My sister also makes them, mostly bracelets. She has sold several for $30-40 to people who came up to her.

Here are a few people I know that have their own businesses.

If you need money and are interested in things like this, then I really do recommend getting into it. They're rare, unique, and not many people know about it, which means good money. It's good side cash and are fun to make. Make sure not to buy cheap wire though like at Wal-Mart. Just go to craft stores like Michaels and get the better stuff. You want wire that bends pretty easy, but stays in place at the same time. Around 26 gauge wire is the best for wrapping and 16 gauge and up for the base.

This is very helpful if you want to learn:

    Exactly what I thought.

Im hoping it's easier than it looks, I might try it as I have too much free time on my hand atm. I cant find the tools needed to make basic ones, what are the names of the ones you use?

This looks really cool and like a pretty fun hobby. Could you post a good beginner's supply list and a link to a good introduction on technique?

They look amazing, you should try make some more suited for men. I wouldn't wear any of the above but I know a lot of girls that would jump at the chance. Good luck man, great hobby!

It's pretty time consuming and does take a lot of patience, but it gets relatively easy once you get the hang of it.

The simpler ones are pretty easy to make actually. Just keep practicing and you'll get better. You don't need many tools. Just a good set of pliers, wire clippers, and a spring clamp. 16 gauge wire is good for wrapping and 26+ for a base.

It really is fun if you're into stuff like this and like working with your hands. Like I said above, the only tools you really need are some pliers and wire clippers. I'd definitely recommend getting a spring clamp too. It makes it a lot easier when the wires can be held in place.

Here is a good link to help you out. This guy has a lot of helpful information and videos. A lot of people post on there with questions that will help you out some. Also if you have anything in particular you need answered, feel free to ask me. There are different techniques. On the more simple ones when you first start out, you can just make the wraps separately instead of building a base. Then just keep wrapping them around the stone and add to it until you're satisfied. It's easier to buy some beads with holes already in them. It's possible to use rocks without a hole and just wrap it tight to keep it in place, but once you get really good and start using expensive gems, then it's better to drill a hole, so they don't fall out of place.

Thanks man. Yeah the ones I've made are definitely more for men. I usually like to use darker colored wire rather than silver and gold. I'll try to post some of mine when I get a chance. I actually know a lot more guys who wear them than girls. I agree that some of them are too flashy and I wouldn't wear them either. I got mine custom made though and I really like it. My friend made a few recently that are really cool.

Yeah some of them are insane and go for several thousand dollars depending on the gems, but they can also be too flashy. I like the darker colored ones and more simple ones more too. Here is one that I'm working on.
