Remove VB6 from Programming
Put simply: VB6 is outdated and not supported any more. It's not a language worth mentioning prominently. If anything it should be defined under "other languages". Most Windows installations come with .Net preinstalled and therefore VB .Net has almost no limitation on its own as a successor.
I feel that having the two grouped is unnecessary and wrong in the first place, as .Net places it on another platform entirely. The syntax is the same, but that's it. Might as well include things like SmallBASIC, DarkBASIC etc. if you're going to group languages like that.

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
I'm entirely clueless with programming and don't want to make any dire errors here, so I'll leave this for Govind, Matthew or Sythe to sort out :3

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
It's a language still used in high schools all over the place, as they're cheap and don't want to buy new licenses. And it's pretty easy to learn. Personally, I find it a lot easier than .Net.
I suggest a new layout for the Programming section as a whole:
Quote:
Programming General
Discussion for Visual Basic 6, ASM, Ruby, other languages and programming in general
.Net Framework
Discussion for Visual Basic.Net and C#.Net
Java
Discussion for Java based programming
C/C++
Discussion for C and C++
Web Programming
Discussion for Perl, PHP, ASP, JavaScript and other web-based languages
|
Thoughts?

I like Darth's Idea. Definitely the current layout needs improvement from the current state.

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
Change the name of "Programming General" to "Other" or something. It fits better.

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
Just put all programming in one section, the area is not active enough to have all of the subsections.

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
No support. VB6 is still used frequently, and I still get it in college (best college of Belgium)
So that should already say enough. Its actually used on all colleges here.
Darth his idea is pretty nice though

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
I'm pretty sure the programming section is Sythe's jurisdiction, I think it's all up to him.

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
Considering Microsoft(Creators) are not supporting it in Windows 8 I believe that we should not be encouraging it over newer languages. If people want to program in VB(god bless their souls) then they should be moving onto VB.Net as it is actively developed and supported. I like Darth's idea as well as it condenses the section which may be able to bring some activity to it.

Re: Remove VB6 from Programming
Denied. It's used regularly enough for highschool and basic college courses.
